Where I Play:

There's a great musical community in Abergavenny and a lot of very talented folk musicians, such as Julie Murphy who I have done a lot of work with over the years. It's a creative place, as is Wales at the moment. Things are definitely on the up. Saying that, I hardly get to play in Wales at the moment, as most of my time seems to be spent travelling and touring further afield. I've been to the US, Finland, Scandinavia and Sardinia but it isn't just the travel and playing that is great, it is meeting the people when you get there and giving them the chance to share in your music. Music transcends boundaries and cultures and people get together through in it - regardless of politics or language.

WOMAD2002I've done some pretty extraordinary journeys to get to gigs. Last November I had one in the Yukon in Canada and couldn't get a flight. It was a six day round trip by car through the Rockies, covering 3000 miles and all I remember thinking was that this was one of the most stupid things I'd done in my life. When I got there though and realised how much people appreciated the effort I'd made to get there, it felt great. I do prefer the intimacy of small gigs and because I play an acoustic instrument, I find the larger venues and the PA system detracts from the playing and the feeling of the music.

I also played WOMAD this year in the World on Your Street tent. It was the most beautiful gig and said everything about why I love music - there was Bosnian singer Tea Hodzic, Polish accordionist Vanya-Bronislav Krawczyk and me, a Welsh guitarist united by music.
