The Caretaker of Bukhara
Abram Ishakov is the caretaker of the oldest synagogue in Central Asia.
Abram Ishakov is the caretaker of the oldest synagogue in Central Asia. This ‘Jewish mosque’ houses a Torah even older, inscribed on deer velum and kept safe allegedly for a thousand years. Abram has a powerful voice and recites for us psalms and prayers in Persian, the language of his city and of Central Asian Jews from Samarkand to Xinjiang in Western China. We intersperse Abram’s voice with stories from this remarkable Jewish community.
