Berhana
Berhana, a multi-talented American artist with Ethiopian roots, shares his take on first-generation immigrant life.
Born in Atlanta, USA to parents from Ethiopia, Amain Berhane is a singer-songwriter, screenwriter and filmmaker who performs as Berhana. He studied screenwriting and worked in the TV industry before deciding that he wanted to do more with his musical abilities. In 2016, he emerged onto the scene with his self-titled EP.
Three years later, he released his debut album Han. The track Janet – a tribute to actress Janet Hubert, who played Will Smith's aunt in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air - went viral, and Grey Luh was featured on the hit TV comedy series Atlanta.
Berhana’s just released his second album Amen: The Nomad’s Dream, alongside a short feature film featuring six of the 12 tracks.
The album blends the sounds of his Ethiopian roots with the music he loved to listen to when growing up in the USA. In this week’s TIA, he explains how the album was born and what it says about his experience as a first-generation immigrant living in the States.
