Backstage: 成人快手 Open Ear

Nikki Bedi is backstage at the 成人快手 Open Ear concert of cutting edge music

In this episode of the Arts Hour Backstage, Nikki Bedi goes behind the scenes at a concert of cutting edge music.

There are surprising sounds from Israeli electric guitarist Yaron Deutsch as he plays the piece Trash TV Trance by the late Italian composer Fausto Romitelli, using a scouring pad on his strings and creates the sound of plants emerging from the void in Black Flowers by composer Chaya Czernowin.

German trumpeter Simon H枚fele talks about playing the world premiere of Turkish-German composer Kaan Bulak鈥檚 Fantasy for Trumpet, the techniques he uses for Kathrin Denner鈥檚 piece Shakti, and the importance of protecting his lips.

Composer Elena Rykova tells us why she requires a grand piano to be stuffed with balls and a face massager for performances of her piece 101% mind uploading and explains why surgeons' gowns and masks need to be worn by the performers.

And the London Contemporary Orchestra is performing with their co-founder and conductor Robert Ames.

Young players, including pianist Katherine Tinker and violinist Galya Bisengalieva, reveal how they blend actual instruments and electronics for Paula Matthusen鈥檚 haunting piece In Absentia.
