Strict measures in Singapore
Singaporeans face life under closer surveillance in the fight to contain Coronavirus; the race to find shelter for California’s homeless people.
Stories from Singapore, California, Bulgaria and Iraq: Singapore has so far gained plaudits for its management of the Coronavirus outbreak, with many countries trying to emulate a similar approach before it’s too late. But the fight to keep the virus from spreading there is not without cost: to personal freedoms and to privacy. And as numbers rise, Singapore’s authorities are getting nervous, Karishma Vashwani reports on how daily life has changed in the city state.
California’s Governor Gavin Newsom has made tackling homelessness one of his top priorities since he came to office last year – a challenge now made more complicated by the social distancing restrictions in place. Michelle Quinn visits one encampment in Oakland California.
Since anti-government protests broke out in Iraq last October more than 600 protesters have been killed across the country. More than 18,000 are estimated to have been wounded and the number continues to climb on a daily basis as protesters clash with security forces. Wil Crisp pays a visit to the heart of the Iraqi protest movement.
The ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ’s Europe correspondent, Kevin Connolly reflects on a largely forgotten thriller which he first read nearly forty years ago. He was reminded of it on a recent trip to the Bulgarian capital Sofia – before the Coronavirus restrictions were in place.
