Unappetising choices in Canada
Why Canadian voters may have fallen out of love with Trudeau; the pride of Pakistan's Kalash people; how Cambodians see their Chinese visitors; a tide of plastic waste in Romania
Canadian voters prepare to give their verdict on Justin Trudeau's missteps - and the Liberal party's agenda - in a general election. Jennifer Chevalier in Ottawa considers how the "blackface" scandal, and concerns over internal politics, might affect Trudeau's chances at the polls on Monday.
Pascale Harter introduces this story, along with others from reporters, journalists and writers around the world.
Wherever you are, it's likely that you've noticed more Chinese visitors to your city or country recently - but in Cambodia, the increased Chinese presence is particularly visible, and much commented upon by local people. Visiting the port city of Sihanoukville, Vincent Ni heard some mixed feelings expressed by a guide - and saw plenty of places now exclusively reserved for foreigners, with "no Khmer people" allowed in.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (also known as "Prince Harry and Kate") were visited Pakistan last week - and ventured high up in the Hindu Kush to talk to mountain villagers about how flash floods affect their lives. Some of the people the Royals met were Kalash - members of a small ethnic minority group with its own archaic religion and still-thriving culture, quite different from the surrounding Muslim communities. Earlier this year, Emma Thomson witnessed their spring festival - and heard about some of their other concerns, from identity politics to neighbourly disputes.
And Nick Thorpe retraces a long journey from Budapest, Hungary, to Bucharest, Romania - following the trail of plastic waste which has filtered out across eastern Europe in post-Communist times. He remembers a time before discarded, indestructible rubbish littered the verges and waterways - and when a hand-woven willow basket might be the closest you'd come to disposable packaging.
