The Old Songs All Sound New

The millennia-old Irish language meets the music of Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Bob Marley... and Bruce Springsteen.

The Old Songs All Sound New is the story of a group of Irish artists, poets, musicians, painters and designers who are shepherding the millennia-old Irish language into the 21st century 鈥 with the help of the music from the likes of Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, David Bowie.

Each year in Dublin, the group runs the IMRAM festival. At its centre is a legendary night of song in which brand new Irish language lyrics for some of rock鈥檚 classics are performed for the first time. This time around they鈥檝e been bringing the songs of Bruce Springsteen 鈥 the quintessential New Jersey rocker, the very definition of Born in The USA 鈥 into the Irish language. Can that possibly work?

The Old Songs All Sound New is presented by Nigerian-born singer and Irish language speaker Esosa Ighodaro, who first met with IMRAM when she was asked to join as gaeilge version of Marley's backing band, the I-Threes, for IMARM's Bob Marley performance. Now, Esosa brings us on a musical imram (translation: 鈥渁 voyage of discovery鈥) to hear how contemporary artists are creating a new identity for the Irish language, and maybe also for 鈥淭he Boss鈥.
