The Freedom Riders of 1961 rode public buses into the American South to protest peacefully for equality.

Hank Thomas was on the first Freedom Ride in 1961. He was later joined by hundreds of other riders, black and white including Lewis Zuchman, Catherine Burks-Brooks, Claire O'Connor and Joan Mulholland. These are some of their stories from the long ride to freedom.
