Events are being held in Normandy to mark the start of the D-Day landings 75 years ago

By the end of D-Day, 4,414 allied troops had been killed and thousands more wounded.

Exactly seventy-five years since the start of the D-Day landings - events are taking place in northern France to remember the largest seaborne invasion in history; the Sudanese government has admitted that at least forty-six demonstrators were killed when the security forces tried to crush pro-democracy protests this week - but it has disputed an opposition figure of one hundred fatalities; and Denmark's centre-left Social Democrat Party has emerged as the winner of Wednesday's general election, with more than twenty-six percent of the vote.
