Cyclone Idai: Mozambique’s minister of defence admits government made mistakes

Oppah Muchinguri said the government failed to anticipate the magnitude of the storm.

Three-hundred people are now known to have died after Cyclone Idai hit southern Africa. Two-hundred of the victims were in Mozambique, and another 100 in Zimbabwe, where the minister of defence has admitted his government failed to anticipate the magnitude of the storm.

According to US-backed forces in Syria, the last section of territory held by so-called Islamic State has fallen. However, some reports suggest there are still clashes ongoing in and around Baghouz in eastern Syria.

The first funerals have been held for some of the victims of the two mass shootings at mosques in New Zealand. There has been criticism of the authorities for delays in returning the victims' bodies to their families for a speedy burial.
