Classical music has long been considered a white, European tradition. But what if its history isn鈥檛 as straightforward as it seems? Mia Thornton sets out to uncover the lasting impact and overlooked legacies of four Black composers and musicians. Artists who have not only played pivotal roles in shaping classical music, but also how all musicians are paid today.
Double bassist Chi-Chi Nwanoku recalls the day that led her to form Chineke! - Europe鈥檚 first ethnically diverse orchestra. Dr Hannah Catherine Jones, shares her perspective on decolonising classical music and making the genre more accessible. Mia explores the story of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor whose death was the catalyst for the monumental change in the way artists are paid royalties and Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, a virtuoso composer and conductor often referred to as the 鈥淏lack Mozart鈥�.
