How to check if a builder is genuine
Wayne Perrey finds out how builders have left customers out of pocket.
A company called ‘Object Builders’ has taken thousands in deposits for building work, which was never carried out. The company had nearly all the official accreditation to look legit, but has left customers thousands out of pocket, Wayne Perrey investigates.
In response to this film, the Financial Conduct Authority says it sympathises with those affected by Object Builders but clarified that it does not regulate building or construction work. It said that its logo should not be used to endorse such work.
Trade competence scheme CERTASS said that it never certified Object Builders, although the company was listed as a Trade Association Member on its website. It says it will improve its website to clarify which firms it has certified.
CERTASS recommends that potential customers research multiple quotes, pay in stages and seek building control approval. It adds that any deposits should be minimal, and ideally paid via credit card.
The Guild of Master Craftsmen says it expelled Object Builders in August 2024 following an investigation. It says it is dedicated to ensuring all members meet the highest standards of professionalism and craftsmanship.
Ratedpeople told us that protecting homeowners and tradespeople is its priority and that it acts swiftly when issues arise. It said that Object Builders was removed from its site in July 2024, and reported to Action Fraud and Trading Standards. It said that all tradespeople on its site are vetted and their work is monitored.
Object Builders did not reply to our requests for comment.
