How are we going to keep warm this winter?
The winter fuel payment cut, is expected to save the Treasury 拢1.4bn this financial year
Pressure has been mounting on The Prime Minister , but he's still defending winter fuel payment cut, telling the 成人快手 over the weekend and his ministers today that "difficult decisions" must be made to fix the country's finances.
George King has been finding out what the cut might mean for keeping the heating on this winter in Suffolk.
Jack Abbott, Labour MP for Ipswich, said:
鈥淭he decision to means-test the Winter Fuel Allowance is not one that anyone wanted to, or expected to, take.
鈥淏ut, when the Chancellor set out the 拢22 billion black hole in the public finances, left and covered up by the previous government, it was clear that inaction would put the UK鈥檚 financial stability at risk. The last Conservative government鈥檚 recklessness got us in this mess - it now falls on the Labour Party to get us out of it.
鈥淭he government is unequivocally committed to the triple lock on pensions, which saw an increase of 拢900 in the state pension this year.
鈥淭he government has also announced plans to extend the Household Support Fund to target help to those who most need it, increase uptake of Pension Credit to ensure the 800,000 eligible pensioners who didn鈥檛 claim it under the last Conservative government do so, and upgrade millions of homes through the Warm 成人快手s Plan."
