Fresh controversy over the two-child benefit cap

Seven Labour MPs have had the whip suspended for six months after voting against the government on an amendment to scrap the two-child benefit cap.

The Scottish National Party had called for the change in policy, which prevents almost all parents from claiming Universal Credit or child tax credit for more than two children.

MPs rejected the SNP amendment by 363 votes to 103, in the first major test of the new Labour government鈥檚 authority.

The Work and Pensions Secretary and Labour MP for Leicester West Liz Kendall explains why the new government has decided not to scrap the cap; people on the streets of Leicester have been telling us what they think of the policy, and Morgan Bestwick from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation explains to Ady Dayman what she thinks the new government should prioritise.
