Dame Kelly Holmes: “It took 34 years to be comfortable to tell you I’m a gay womanâ€
Dame Kelly Holmes is one of Britain’s most popular double Olympic gold medallists from Athens 2004.
What should have been a time to celebrate was, in fact, done facing fear - a fear that she might be outed as being gay.
Kelly also had a career in the British Army and for much of her working life being gay in the military was illegal.
In 2000, the law was changed but Kelly still lived her life in fear before finally talking about her sexuality publicly in 2022.
She told Sporthour’s Caroline Barker about those Athens games and living in fear for 34 years.
