As Super Tuesday votes were being counted, it looked for a while like Donald Trump was going to have a clean sweep of states on Super Tuesday but his only remaining rival Nikki Haley denied the former president that.

The former governor of South Carolina and former US Ambassador to the United Nations won a narrow victory in the small north-eastern state of Vermont. But mathematically, it's very unlikely she will gather sufficient votes across the remaining state primary contests to beat Mr Trump to win the Republican Party nomination.

Before the polls closed, Newsday spoke to a large financial donor to Ms Haley's campaign -- Jay Lefkowitz, who is a lawyer and a former adviser to President George W Bush -- and asked him why he thinks Nikki Haley is the best choice for the Republican Party's presidential nomination.

"She was a terrific two-term Governor in South Carolina where she was embraced by both Republicans and Democrats - she would be a superb leader for this country."

"There's just so much uncertainty around Trump, if I was in Nikki Haley's shoes and I was getting the kind of support that she has been getting, I would stay in the race."
