A newborn girl found in a shopping bag east London is thought to have been less than an hour old when she was found, the Metropolitan Police says.

The baby was discovered wrapped in a towel inside the bag in Newham in sub-zero temperatures by a dog walker, who kept her warm until paramedics arrived.

Police said the baby was unharmed and is safe and well in hospital.

Officers are "extremely concerned" for the welfare of the girl's mother and appealed for her to get in touch.
