Series Clip: Dictator for life

Caesar won the civil war against Pompey, returned victorious to Rome, and instigated a programme of reforms to address Rome’s manifold problems. Yet at the same time he has been steadily drawing ever more power to himself, in ways that utterly undermine the founding principle of the Roman Republic - that power must be shared. As he makes plans to leave Rome and conquer Parthia, he resolves to tighten his hold on power absolutely – and is declared ‘dictator for life’.
