Protest over Congleton's Moody Hall

A campaign group fear the historic building may be lost forever.

A campaign group fear the historic building may be lost forever, unless Cheshire East Council intervene.

Councillor Mick Warren, Cheshire East Council's chair of environment and communities, said: "It is sad to see this historic building in such a poor state of repair. The property is not owned by Cheshire East Council and, therefore, we are limited in our powers to protect it.
"We have informed the town council and local ward members that officers from our heritage team have visited the site and they have been in contact with the owner, and neighbours. They have also been in discussions with the fire service and Cheshire police.
"We have previously taken steps to secure the ground floor of the property, including access from the adjoining car park. Following the recent fire, the council served an 'Urgent Works Notice' seeking to make access from Moody Street more secure.
Council officers will also be meeting with the owner of the site to see if progress can be made to implement a previously approved residential planning permission, which would secure the long-term protection of the building.

Historic England Statement : "We are sad to hear about the continuing deterioration of Moody Hall; it's a lovely example of a high status 18th century town house and is a reflection of Congleton's wealth and influence at the time, which was generated through the silk trade. We hope a solution is found to secure its long-term future."

The owner of Moody Hall is yet to reply to our attempts to contact them.
