Saving Lives in Gaza - Medics on the Frontline
Hospitals in Gaza are at breaking point. Medics are warning that thousands could die as hospitals packed with wounded people run dangerously low on fuel and basic supplies.
Hospitals across Gaza are at breaking point. Medics are warning that thousands could die as hospitals packed with wounded people run dangerously low on fuel and basic supplies, such as blood, drugs and water. The buildings are overwhelmed, not just with patients. Corridors and waiting areas are packed with Gazan citizens who have nowhere else to go.
Nick Maynard - a consultant surgeon - runs a team of doctors in Oxford - who, for many years have worked regularly in Gaza teaching the medics there. Their work is funded by the UK based humanitarian charity, Medical Aid for Palestinians - which devotes all its resources into supporting health care in Gaza. This team has been in almost hourly contact with colleagues across Gaza - since the Israeli bombardment began in response to the deadly attack by Hamas fighters in southern Israel on the 7th October. They've set up a social media platform called GazaMedicVoices on X, formerly Twitter, and Instagram - where all contacts in Gaza can post critical information - including video recordings and voice messages. Each poster is known to Nick and his team - and their posts are verified by them before being uploaded.
Because of the challenging situation on the ground, it is rare to hear these accounts. Nick has been speaking to the 成人快手's senior presenter, Christian Fraser, who - over the years - has reported from the Shifa Hospital - the main medical facility in Gaza City. This is 5 Minutes On - Saving Lives in Gaza - Medics on the frontline.
