How Safe Do Teenagers Feel in 2023?
Meet five teenagers who have endured sexual harassment on the street from a very young age and who say they feel unsafe walking out alone.
A new survey of teenagers for Radio 5 Live has found that more than a third of 13-18-year-olds do not feel safe on the street when they are out on their own. For girls, it's even worse: nearly half reported feeling unsafe and a quarter said they had experienced sexual harassment in some form. It is a stark picture of wolf whistling, leering and sexual comments directed toward young people – even when they're in their school uniform. In this episode of our 5 Minutes On podcast, ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ 1Xtra Talks presenter Richie Brave – who was previously a youth worker – visits the Albany Performing Arts centre in Deptford to hear about young people's experiences and to ask: "How safe do teenagers feel in 2023?"
