Joseph Bologne: The famous 18th Century composer you've probably never heard of
Actor Kelvin Harrison Jr on his latest role as the violin virtuoso and composer Joseph Bologne
Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges was a French violinist, conductor and composer. Born on 25 December 1745, he is considered to be the first classical composer of African descent to receive widespread acclaim.
Actor Kelvin Harrison Jr spoke to the 成人快手's Anita Rani and Jermaine Jenas about his latest role as Joseph Bologne in the film Chevalier.
"I thought it was fictional story and then I found out he was a real dude," says Harrison. "He became the best fencer in Paris at the time, and one of the best violinists at the time, rivalled Mozart...and got the attention of Marie Antoinette and the king and they named him the Chevalier de Saint-Georges."
One of his biggest challenges was learning to play the violin as a convincing virtuoso.
"I worked really hard," says Harrison. "I called my dad and he said 'we're going to do seven days a week, six hours a day' and I had started off having three months but ending up having five months [training]."
"I'm playing Jean Michel Basqiuat next," says Harrison.
