Medics in Ghana say the lives of patients and babies are being put at risk because of the number of nurses leaving the West African country for jobs in Britain's National Health Service. The latest data shows that more than 1,200 Ghanaians joined the UK's nursing register last year - twice the number from the whole of the EU. Meanwhile in Ghana, there are crippling staff shortages.

The International Council of Nurses says the "significant increase" in recruitment of overseas nurses is "out of control" in general - and not just in the UK, but in other wealthy nations. Howard Catton is the chief executive of the International Council of Nurses. He explains to Newshour's James Menendez how trends in nursing recruitment are taking skilled nurses out of the healthcare systems that need them most.
