Why East Finchley locals could be paid 拢1600 with no catch

How would you like to receive 拢1600 a month with no strings attached?

It may sound too good to be true, but that's what 30 people could be offered, under plans for the first-ever trial of a 'universal basic income' in England.

Researchers from think tank Autonomy are seeking financial backing for a two-year pilot programme to see how it would change the lives of the group.

The concept of a universal basic income sees the government pay all individuals a set salary regardless of their means. Participants for this trial will be drawn from central Jarrow, in north-east England, and East Finchley, in north London.

Universal basic income is not a new idea, but it's certainly controversial - so what are the pros and cons?

成人快手 Radio London's Ross Ryan explores the issue.
