Finland officially joins Nato

Finland has become the 31st member of the Nato. Its membership of the security alliance means Nato's border with Russia has almost doubled. Finland's accession is a setback for Russia's Vladimir Putin, who had repeatedly complained of Nato's expansion before his full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Finland's Defence Minister, Antti Kaikkonen, says joining Nato will make Finland even more safe, and "was good for Finland and good for Nato".
