Starbucks to sell olive oil coffee to Italians

The world's largest coffee chain hopes the drink will boost their popularity in a country where it has just 20 stores.

Starbucks is launching a line of olive oil-infused drinks in Italy. The world’s largest coffee chain has struggled to break into the Italian market since it launched there a few years ago. Italy's coffee scene is famous for its independent and often family-run cafes. Starbucks currently has around 20 stores in the country. And it’s not the only American chain struggling to make inroads into European markets.

Last year Domino’s pizza stopped trading in Italy citing stiff local competition. There was also scepticism when Starbucks arrived in Italy a few years ago, with some calling for a boycott. But it’s survived and now it’s hoping that the most Italian of ingredients – olive oil – will help it crack the Italian market. Francesco Sanapo is a champion Italian barista he told Newhsour what he thinks of mixing olive oil and coffee.
