Nicola Sturgeon resigns: 'It takes its toll'
Nicola Sturgeon is one of the most significant political figures of the past decade. But there have been tensions in her party recently.
This was an announcement that caught almost everybody by surprise. After more than eight years in the role, Nicola Sturgeon is resigning as Scotland's first minister. She will stay on in the role until a successor is chosen.
At a news conference in Edinburgh, Ms Sturgeon said she'd been "wrestling" with the question of her future for some weeks and that the decision came "from a place of duty and love".
Nicola Sturgeon is a huge figure in UK politics. She’s synonymous with the campaign for Scottish independence. Just 18 months ago – she led the SNP to a comfortable victory at the Holyrood election, just shy of a majority in the Scottish Parliament. But the last few weeks have been far from plain sailing – and now the SNP is facing up to the end of the Sturgeon era.
