Haiti gang violence: A teenager's life cut short

The story of 19-year-old Bruce, who was killed by a gang in Port-au-Prince.

Haiti, a country engulfed in extreme violence and profound poverty is somewhere that's both difficult and dangerous to cover.聽So, this corner of the Caribbean doesn't get the attention that it deserves.聽

For many observers, it's a failed state in America's backyard: it's been the poorest country in the Americas for many years.聽But it usually had a government, of sorts.聽Earlier this month, though, the last elected politicians in Haiti left office, their terms having expired.聽That leaves a prime minister with no mandate - and no real power.聽 Instead, power lies firmly with the armed gangs that have taken over almost all aspects of life in the capital Port-au-Prince.聽

So what's it like to live in a city where gangs control the majority of neighbourhoods?聽The focus of our story is a young man, called Bruce: he was 19 and a talented basketball player, with dreams of playing in America's NBA.聽 But those dreams were brutally crushed when he was shot dead in a gang attack outside his secondary school.聽

He was on his way to a meeting to help him put together a scholarship application for an American university. The man who was going to help him is Dave Fils-Aim茅, who left Haiti for the US when he was young, and then returned to set up an organisation that uses basketball to help young men and boys stay out of trouble.聽He's been telling Newshour's James Menendez what Bruce was like.
