The Patriot is an advanced surface-to-air missile system intended to defend against aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles.
The news comes on another day of Russian air strikes on Ukrainian cities, including the capital Kyiv, part of a sustained campaign to destroy the country's essential infrastructure.
In a video message, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky, said all drones used in the attack had been shot down.
Phillips O'Brien is professor of strategic studies at St Andrews University in Scotland, he explained to Newshour what the Patriot missile defence system is and how it might help Ukraine.
"It's become one of the most successful and accurate anti-missile systems in the world, it's a very high end piece of equipment."
