Ancient nit comb reveals the oldest sentence ever written

Researchers have translated the oldest sentence ever written, in the language of the Caananites, on a nit comb.

The oldest sentence ever written - in the first alphabet, the language of the Caananites - has been discovered in Israel.聽It's carved聽on an ivory comb that was used to get nits out of people's hair thousands of years ago.聽

The comb was discovered in Tel Lachish in 2017, but the letters inscribed on it were only noticed and translated this year. The inscription reads: "May this tusk root out the lice of the hair and the beard."

Researchers also found remnants of head lice still present when the comb was examined under a microscope.

Edith Hall, Professor of Classics at Durham University, explains why this find is so exciting:

"It takes us directly into the life of somebody 3,700 years ago suffering from exactly the same problem as anybody who has had to get kids through that dreadful stage of picking up lice."
