Activist Alaa Abdel Fattah’s aunt: ‘We only have a few days left’
Jailed British-Egyptian activist Alaa Abdel Fattah has stopped drinking water as he steps up his hunger strike to coincide with the start of the COP27 summit.
For more than 200 days, the 40 year old has consumed just 100 calories to push Egypt to allow him UK consular access. From today, he has vowed to refuse even water.Â
Abdel was a key activist in the 2011 Arab Spring, and is currently serving a five-year sentence in Egypt after being accused of spreading false news.
His aunt, in London, is the novelist Ahdaf Soueif. She tells Newshour they fear Alaa has only a few days left.
