Liquefied natural gas: What are the environmental implications?

With Russian gas supplies to Europe restricted, the continent has looked elsewhere for alternatives, one of the big solutions touted was LNG - Liquefied Natural Gas.聽

Mostly shipped in from America, LNG has filled a big supply gap.聽

But according to a new report, it's also highly damaging from an environmental point of view.聽

Rystad Energy, an independent organisation advising governments on energy policy, has found that LNG generates ten times more聽carbon emissions than gas delivered through a pipeline.

Patrick King , an analyst with Rystad, explains:聽

"The switch away from Russian piped gas to LNG this year is potentially going to cause an extra 15 million tonnes of imported CO2 emissions when compared to 2021."
