What killed off the Neanderthals in Europe 40,000 years ago?聽

There have been many theories as to why instead of Neanderthals, it was Homo Sapiens that survived and indeed thrived, ending in us - modern day humans.

But now new research by London's Natural History Museum suggests it was sex that could have led to the Neanderthals' downfall, specifically interbreeding with early humans (Homo Sapiens).聽

Professor Chris Stringer of London's Natural History Museum is the author of a new study into the subject.

He has found that "there is plenty of evidence of the Neanderthal's DNA coming into Homo Sapiens populations," but "strangely there is no evidence of it going the other way".
