Parkland school shooting: Gunman spared the death penalty
Four and a half years ago, a young man called Nikolas Cruz walked into the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and killed聽seventeen people: fourteen students and three staff members.聽
It was the deadliest mass shooting ever to reach a jury trial in the US, and the jury has now recommended that Cruz not be given the death penalty but be imprisoned for the rest of his life, without any chance of parole.聽
Gerard Albert is Broward county reporter for the local NPR station WLRN. He was at the courthouse as the jury delivered their verdict and explains how the victims' families are feeling.
