The Nobel Prize for Physics has been awarded to three men for their work on quantum information science. Despite working independently from each other, Frenchman Alain Aspect, American John F Clauser and Austrian Anton Zeilinger will share the award and the prize money of 拢800,000.
Alain Aspect, 75, is affiliated to the Universit茅 Paris-Saclay and 脡cole Polytechnique, Palaiseau. John Clauser, 79, runs his own company in California. Anton Zeilinger, 77, is attached to the University of Vienna. The same three men won the Wolf Prize together in 2010.
Their work could pave the way for a new generation of powerful computers and impregnable encryption of communications.
John Clauser says that despite never actually working together they are all "good friends." He found out that he was one of the recipients of the award in the early hours of the morning, and it is the result of research that he started more than 50 years ago.
