COP27: What should we expect from Sharm el-Sheikh?

The UN Climate Change conference, COP27, will begin November in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egpyt.

The country has been under the microscope for human rights, with Amnesty International saying it was in the throes of a "human rights crisis," and Human Rights Watch (HRW) claiming Egypt was severely curtailing the work of environmental groups. Officials in Cairo said the HRW report was "misleading."

Last year's COP26 in Glasgow saw many countries making huge commitments to tackle climate change. Alok Sharma, COP26 president, is in the process of handing over to Egypt and is very clear that protests must be allowed:

"It's so important that the voice of young people is heard loud and clear at every COP, and COP27 should be no different... I believe Egypt wants to demonstrate that this will be a COP where civil society and youth participate."
