Italy election: Giorgia Meloni and the EU
Italy's election has been closely watched by officials in Brussels.
Giorgia Meloni has been elected as Italy's first female prime minister. Her party, the Brothers of Italy, has been described as far-right, and there have been concerns about some of Meloni's policies.
Italy is a founding member of the European Union and the third biggest economy in the bloc. The recent elections have been closely watched by officials in Brussels.
Italy's former Ambassador to Nato, Stefano Stefanini, places Meloni "on the right, her party is not centre, she is on the right, she has worked back from fascist roots." But he says her party "has struck a more moderate course".
"There are concerns... but for statements and positions she made in the more recent past, being Eurosceptic, the idea of Italy exiting the euro if not the EU... she's changed on that. The concerns are there, but I think Emmanuel Macron struck the right approach, which is she has been democratically elected... so the best approach is to try to work constructively with her, and I do hope this approach will prevail in Brussels."
