Eliud Kipchoge breaks his own marathon world record
Who is the fastest man in the world? If you're looking purely at speed - it's the holder of the 100 metres world record. But, if you take endurance into account then surely the marathon is the benchmark.
At the finish of the Berlin marathon the fastest man over 26 miles was Kenyan double-Olympic champion, Eliud Kipchoge. He improved his global best by half a minute; finishing in two hours, one minute and nine seconds, winning by five minutes.
Athletics journalist Mark Woods says the win is "huge when you take it over a course of a whole race... he won by five minutes... the pace that he had was phenomenal, he went through the first half marathon in under one hour, extraordinary, on course for a sub-two hour marathon... incredible combination of speed stamina and endurance... another phenomenal performance."
