Adnan Syed release: 'He's never had a day in his life as an adult free man'
The murder conviction of Adnan Syed, featured in hit podcast Serial, has been quashed.
In 2000 Adnan Syed was convicted for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, in the US state of Maryland. The story remained in obscurity for 14 years until it was picked up and covered in minute detail by the podcast, Serial. More than 340 million episodes of Serial have been downloaded since its launch in 2014, making it one of the first big hits of the podcast genre.
A judge has now quashed Adnan Syed's conviction and released him after 23 years in prison, pending a new trial.
Susan Simpson is a Washington based lawyer who helped Adnan Syed's family fight his case after listening to Serial. She explains the key things that led to his release:
"The state's theory about what happened on the day in question was wrong...their entire timeline was just erroneous," she adds. "I would like to think the system was capable of fixing its own errors eventually...but Adnan Syed would not have had any hope of being free without the media attention."
