Family shattered by rape and murder of sisters

There's been shock and protest in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh after two teenage sisters were found hanging from a tree after being raped and strangled. Their family says they were forcibly taken from their home by men on motorcycles. Six people have been arrested.

Crimes against women have been rising in India over recent years. Uttar Pradesh state recorded the highest number in the past year. Yogita Bhayana, who runs People Against Rape in India, tells Newshour why crimes are occurring with such depressing regularity: "The very basic issue is with our social fabric...it is normal to rape a girl and for a girl to come out and report is a big taboo so she is blamed for being raped."
