Roger Federer to retire from top-level tennis

Roger Federer, one of the greatest players of all time, to retire from professional tennis after Laver Cup.

Roger Federer, one of the greatest players of all time, has announced he will retire from tennis after the Laver Cup in London this month. In an an audio message on Twitter, the 20-time Grand Slam champion said, " I am 41 years old. I have played more than 1,500 matches over 24 years. Now I must recognise when it is time to end my competitive career."

Newshour spoke to Ben Rothenberg, editor of Raquet magazine, about the significance of the announcement. "It's a huge moment for tennis for sure. It's really the end of an era" he says.

"He was a bedrock of the sport through decades and really inspired people" Mr Rothenberg adds. "He carried himself in a certain elegance and had this aura that people really responded to. It was almost like a James Bond type of thing he had."

Roger Federer's announcement comes straight off the heels of Serena Williams announcing her retirement and will see two of tennis's all time greatest players stepping away.
