Russian reporter given 22-year sentence on treason charges
Well-respected former defence reporter Ivan Safronov, who previously worked for Kommersant and Vedomosti, has been sentenced to 22 years in prison on charges of treason following accusations of divulging state secrets. The judge said the 32-year-old would serve time in a "strict regime penal colony".
This is the latest in a string of crackdowns on independent Russian media by the Kremlin. Former colleague of Mr Safronov, Taisia Bekbulatova, the head of Holod media and living and working in exile in Georgia, has expressed her anger at the situation and she 'hopes all these people from FSB will be imprisoned, because they faked this whole criminal case against Ivan."
