Capitol riots: Why are the committee hearings taking place?
The US House of Representatives committee investigating the Capitol riot is holding hearings into the attack. Supporters of former President Donald Trump stormed Congress on 6 January 2021. The Democrat-led inquiry into the attack aims to show that Mr Trump conspired to prevent the peaceful transfer of power.
Leslie Vinjamuri, Director of the US and Americas Programme at Chatham House, says the aim of the hearings is to take the public through events before and during the attack, and demonstrate former President Trump's role at the heart of the alleged conspiracy to undermine the result of the election and storm the Capitol.
"The hearings are intended to create the historical record and to set the record straight. We've seen the numbers of people who have continued to believe in the 'big lie' [that Donald Trump won the election]."
