Why has this year's South Asian mango harvest been cut by half?

Mangoes are one of South Asia's most important cash crops and in demand all over the world. The Mango Growers Association in India, the world's largest producer, says yields in the main mango-growing area could fall by as much as 70 per cent.

Waheed Ahmed, head of the Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters and Importers Association, says that mango production in Pakistan is down by as much as 50 per cent. He cites extreme weather, such as unseasonally hot temperatures in March, and hailstorms and rain last summer, water shortages and a scarciy of diesel as reasons for the problems, as well as the fact that mango harvesting processes need to be updated. He says costs of production, and the prices of mangoes in Pakistan, have also risen steeply, and the situation is of concern to everyone along the supply chain, from the farmers to the exporters.
