Giro d'Italia: Biniam Girmay celebrates as first black African stage winner

Eritrean cyclist Biniam Girmay, a black African cyclist has won a stage in one of the most prestigious races in the calendar - one of Europe's grand tours.聽 The 22-year old Eritrean Biniam Girmay sprinted to victory in Stage ten of the Giro D'Italia. Jeremy Whittle, the Guardian's Tour de France correspondent, describes the win as "huge" and says it is "confirmation of his talent", and particularly significant given cycling's reputation as a sport dominated by white competitors.

Sadly, since that win, he has had to pull out of the Giro d鈥橧talia after being hit in the eye with a prosecco cork during celebrations of his win.

"He's kicked down a door that was previously closed."
