Sri Lanka: 'There's a lot that needs to be done - really fast'
A protester hopes PM Ranil Wickremesinghe will recognise the urgency of the situation in Sri Lanka and secure the finances needed for fuel, food and medication.
Ranil Wickremesinghe has been appointed the new prime minister of Sri Lanka by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The news has been met with dismay by many as he has been in post several times before, and to many, has contributed to the economic crisis that has engulfed the country, with fuel, food and medicines now in dangerously short supply.
Mr Wickremesinghe is seen as being close to the Rajapaksa family, and many think he has been chosen because he will be likely to guarantee their security. Protests started in early April in the capital, Colombo, and have grown in size and spread across the country.
Anoka Abeyratne is an environmental activist in Sri Lanka and one of those who've been out on the streets calling for political change. She says she hopes that Wickremesinghe will recognise the urgency of the situation - that he will tackle corruption, and introduce reforms that are more longterm. She says they will continue to call for President Rajapaksa to step down.
