North Korea: 'Double defector' crosses demilitarised zone for second time

A man from North Korea who defected to South Korea by crossing the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone - the DMZ - in 2020, seems to have returned home.

Laura Bicker, 成人快手 Asian correspondent, says that in 2020, the man, claiming he was a professional gymnast, jumped the three metre (10 feet) fence from the North Korean side, and went 14 hours without detection. The border area is four kilometres (13 feet) wide, land mined and surrounded by surveillance equipment and watch towers. Sources believe a man who crossed back to North Korea on New Year's Day 2022 is the same person. This time, it was three hours before he was detected on the North Korean side.

There are rumours that he was a spy, but it seems he had been working as a cleaner. North Korean defectors can struggle to assimilate into South Korean society, and often face discrimination. No motive is known at this time.
