Haiti explosion: More than 60 killed in fuel tanker blast
More than 60 people have been killed after a fuel tanker exploded in Cap-Haïtien, northern Haiti. Reports say the vehicle was involved in an accident, and the victims had been trying to gather leaking fuel when it ignited. The explosion comes as the country is experiencing a severe fuel shortage with powerful gangs seizing control of fuel distribution. Prime Minister Ariel Henry said the entire Caribbean nation was grieving after the accident, as he declared three days of mourning.
Harold Isaac is a freelance journalist based in Port-au-Prince. He says that the two main hospitals are overwhelmed with people suffering from burns and trauma, and are lacking the most basic supplies. The explosion affected a 100-metre area, and destroyed a number of homes in the neighbourhood.
