Mercedes to appeal Verstappen's controversial Formula 1 victory

'A lot of F1 journalists are going to be drinking a lot of coffee this week.'

A new Formula 1 world champion was crowned yesterday as Red Bull's Max Verstappen clinched his maiden world title at the age of 24, becoming the first Dutchman ever to do so.

But the race, which ended one of the most exciting and tight championships in years, ended in controversy after Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes team argued that the race director Michael Masi did not apply the rules correctly - allowing Verstappen the opportunity to change his tyres and overtake Hamilton who had looked confidently in the lead. Mercedes has said it will appeal.

Confused?

Sports journalist Natasha Henry was following it all.

"They have 96 hours to appeal which actually takes us till Thursday so I think a lot of F1 journalists are going to be drinking a lot of coffee this week. But the thing that happens on Thursday evening is the end of season party which will be when Max is crowned officially as world champion, so this needs to be dealt with in the next four days."
