Banning women’s football ‘was devastating for the game’
Football Association Director of the Women’s Professional Game, Kelly Simmons, discusses the legacy of banning women’s football in the UK.
The ban on women’s playing football lasted nearly 50 years until an FA Council meeting in January 1970 rescinded the resolution made five decades earlier, and speaking with Sportshour presenter Caroline Barker, Simmons said the ban ‘was devastating for the game.’
Sunday, 5th December 2021 marks 100 years since the enforcement of the ban, and Simmons explains why the FA decided to hold the Women’s FA Cup at Wembley on that date to mark the anniversary.
